Broadhalfpenny Down, on Hyden Farm Lane between Clanfield and Hambledon, is one of the most important sites in the history of cricket. Known as the "Cradle of Cricket", it was the home ground of the Hambledon Club, which did much to shape the modern game in the 18th century.
Opposite the ground stands The Bat & Ball, a historic pub with deep cricketing associations. The old parish boundary between Clanfield and Hambledon once ran through the building, and a brass strip set into the floor still marks the line. The ground remains in use and a monument commemorates its place in cricketing history.
The down sits in open countryside on the western edge of the parish, reached along Hyden Farm Lane past Hyden Wood.
