Moving to Clanfield: A Newcomer’s Guide

Clanfield has grown quickly in recent decades and is a popular place to settle, thanks to its village feel, its schools and its position on the edge of the South Downs. Here is an orientation for newcomers.
Where Clanfield sits
Clanfield is in the East Hampshire district, west of the A3, roughly 2.4 miles north of Horndean and 6 miles south of Petersfield. The A3(M) ends just south of the village, giving fast road links towards Portsmouth and, northwards, Guildford and London.
Councils
Clanfield has three tiers of local government: Clanfield Parish Council for very local matters, East Hampshire District Council for services such as bin collections and planning, and Hampshire County Council for education, highways and social care. The village is in the Clanfield and Finchdean ward.
Schools
There are two schools in the village: Petersgate Infant School in new Clanfield and Clanfield Junior School in old Clanfield. Older children travel to secondary schools in the surrounding area.
Amenities
Day-to-day needs are well covered: a Co-op convenience store and Post Office on White Dirt Lane, The Clanfield Practice GP surgery, Rowlands Pharmacy on Green Lane, a dental practice, cafés, takeaways, salons and estate agents. The Clanfield Sports and Community Centre on Endal Way opened in 2019 and, with the Memorial Hall in South Lane, hosts village activities.
Getting around
Bus services run towards Southsea, Portsmouth and Petersfield. The nearest railway stations are Petersfield and Rowlands Castle, both with services towards London and the coast.
The outdoors
Perhaps the biggest draw: the South Downs National Park wraps around the village on three sides, and Queen Elizabeth Country Park is within walking distance.
