Clanfield is a village and civil parish in the south-east of the East Hampshire district, sitting just west of the A3 about 2.4 miles north of Horndean, 6 miles south of Petersfield and 12 miles north of Portsmouth. At the 2021 census the parish had a population of 6,015 — a 30% rise on 2011, driven by new housing.
A village of two halves
Locals talk about "Old" Clanfield and "New" Clanfield. Old Clanfield, around the church of St James, has been settled for centuries; new Clanfield has grown mostly over the last sixty years. The two together give the village both a historic core — church, pond, thatched well and cottages — and a modern centre with the shops and services most people use day to day.
Shops and services
The everyday shopping is spread across the Drift Road, South Lane and Green Lane parades and White Dirt Lane. You'll find the Southern Co-op convenience store and the Post Office together on White Dirt Lane, The Clanfield Practice GP surgery nearby, Rowlands Pharmacy on Green Lane, cafés and takeaways, a couple of estate agents, hair and beauty salons, and a dental practice on South Lane. Eating and drinking
For a small village, Clanfield is well served for pubs. The Rising Sun sits in the old village next to the church; the Hampshire Hog is a Fuller's pub with a big garden out towards the A3; and the historic Bat & Ball stands opposite the Broadhalfpenny Down cricket ground on the Hambledon border. The great outdoors
Clanfield's biggest draw is its setting. The South Downs National Park borders the village on three sides, and Queen Elizabeth Country Park — with Butser Hill, beech woods and miles of trails — is right on the doorstep. Windmill Hill, topped by Chalton Windmill, overlooks the village from across the A3.
Getting around
There are bus services towards Southsea, Portsmouth and Petersfield. The nearest railway stations are at Petersfield and Rowlands Castle.
