Broadhalfpenny Down: The Cradle of Cricket
On a down between Clanfield and Hambledon lies one of the most important grounds in the history of the game.
Few Hampshire villages can claim a place in sporting history quite like Clanfield's. On Hyden Farm Lane, on the western edge of the parish towards Hambledon, lies Broadhalfpenny Down — known the world over as the "Cradle of Cricket".
The Hambledon Club
In the 18th century, Broadhalfpenny Down was the home ground of the Hambledon Club, one of the most important clubs in the early development of cricket. In its heyday the club took on — and beat — teams representing all England, and did much to shape the laws and style of the modern game.
The Bat & Ball
Opposite the ground stands The Bat & Ball, a historic pub deeply associated with the club's story. The old parish boundary between Clanfield and Hambledon once ran directly through the building, and a brass strip set into the floor still marks the line today. It's now a Fuller's pub serving food and ales.
Visiting today
